Make it Fun

One of my favorite movie lines is a Vince Vaughn classic, The Break Up.  She gets really mad at him and says, “I want you to WANT to do the dishes.”  He replies, “Why would I WANT to do the dishes?”   My husband and I use this movie moment to illustrate our feelings to each other often.  We will be ready to explode, seriously not understanding why the other one is behaving the way they are, and one of us will go, “OH!  It’s a why would I want to do the dishes thing!”  There are things that just need to happen, and some cannot grasp the concept of trying to embrace the benefits of the work, or what it means to someone else for you to   “just do it.”

With the kids, I try to encourage them to remember that as soon as the work is done it is playtime.  Sometimes we do play time first…then we know we have to commit one hour of chores to keep life in order.  I have to admit, in the last year we fell off this wagon. Chaos kind of took over.   I’m really trying to get back on it to restore order for all involved.  We aren’t perfect, but we are making progress.

Some people just know how to make simple things fun.  For some it is cutting sandwiches into dinosaurs, or pouring pancakes that look like Mickey Mouse.  Maybe it’s blasting your favorite music while you clean the house.  For the last month and a half, the closest contact I have with my husband in Iraq is Skype calls. Some would say… that is no fun.

I’m grateful for this technology.  Our mothers and grandmothers had to write letters that would take weeks to arrive, and then weeks to get a response to even know if your husband was alive.  I get to see mine every day.  He calls early morning and he mostly connects with the kids before school.  He calls again in the late evening, when I can have a few minutes to myself with him.  We exchange any financial business or “life” stuff that needs to be taken care of, and the rest is fun.  I’m constantly amazed at how he can keep us all laughing

I didn’t love the movie, but I have to say there were some really “real” moments. I don’t think I’ll ever forget whats-her-name walking around naked after the bikini wax.
