What’s New About It?

It’s easy to get caught up in the same thing every day.  Small children remind us how much they need and want the comfort of the same thing every single day.  We all have that book we know by heart that we’ve read over and over again to our kid.  The babies squeeze on to that one familiar lovey.  My youngest wants to watch Finding Nemo all the time.  He gets it once a day, about a third of the movie.  He would prefer to watch it all day, all the time….like a running soundtrack to his life.  It’s like the Rocky Horror Picture Show for him.  He chimes in, interacts, and chants along when he feels it works.

There is something about routine that helps keep order.  I think it helps keep sanity, too.   Although for me,  it is absolutely essential to shake things up or I get incredibly complacent, and sometimes depressed, if it is all the same all the time.  Balance between order and chaos is bliss for me.  I don’t need every day wrapped up in a perfect package and tied up with a perfect bow.  Sometimes my life looks like Christmas morning, before someone got the trash bags out.  We navigate, get through it, enjoy the people in front of us and the moment at hand.  There is always a day to stop, and like the Cat in the Hat and his magic machine, just kind of clean it all up.  We put life back together, wrap it and tie that bow, knowing that in the drop of a hat, we will tear into it and have fun all over again.

Today is a put it all back together day.  I’m looking forward to it, and know that if I “just keep swimming…” it will work.
